Vatican Museum

The Vatican Museums (Musei Vaticani) are the public art and sculpture museums in the Vatican City, which display works from the extensive collection of the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Julius II founded the museums in the 16th century. The Sistine Chapel and the Stanze della Segnatura decorated by Raphael are on the visitor route through the Vatican Museums. Continuing into St. Peter’s Basilica, the splendid church and the ever famous Saint Peter’s Square, designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini, together with the colonnade, provide the setting for the largest church dedicated to Christianity.

The construction of Saint Peter’s Basilica began in 1506 and was finished in 1612; to be precise, it is a reconstruction, the present basilica having been built on the location of a previous one built by the Emperor Constantine. The most characterizing element of St. Peter’s Cathedral is the dome, masterpiece by Michelangelo Buonarroti, who also planned the whole first version of the basilica, extending an original idea by Bramante. The dome was completed by the architects Giacomo della Porta and Domenico Fontana following strictly the schemes by Michelangelo. The interior of the cathedral has many masterpieces , one of the most famous is the Pieta by Michelangelo.

Colosseum

After a break for lunch the tour will carry on at Circus Maximus and see a spectacular view of the Palatine Hill with its Ancient Palaces. This Hill is one of the most important hills because 2700 years ago it led to Rome’s foundation with its first king Romulus. Here we will proceed to the celebrated Piazza Venezia, situated at the base of the Capitoline Hill which meets one of the most important streets of the center of the capital, the Via Fori Imperiali.

Following this road, you will be able to admire The Coliseum, originally known as the Flavian Ampitheater, which is probably the most famous one in the world. It had a capacity to sit about 50,000 spectators that would marvel at the gladiator competitions (the entrance to the Coliseum is 11 euro, if you would like to go and avoid the lines please let us know in advance and we will purchase the tickets for you).

After we will take you to the Ancient Roman Temple of Phanteon, which was dedicated to the 7 planetary gods (Sun, Moon, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars) and Piazza Navona the most famous squares in the world. Trevi FountainThis square was an ancient roman stadium, a colossal structure in travertine and brick 267 meters long and 56 metres wide, with capacity of 30.000 spectators, and in the center of it you will admire the Fountain of the Four Rivers.

The next stop will be at the magical Trevi Fountain good luck is to be acquired by throwing in a coin to this enormous and most noted fountain from the 17th century. Our tour will finish at the Spanish Steps so you can regard the amazing staircase that consists of 135 steps that was built to connect the Spanish Embassy (where the square takes its name from) to the Church of the SS. Trinita’ dei Monti. Here you can take your free time between most elegant and exclusive shops and boutique.
