Coming in from the cruise ship to the port of Civitavecchia, your English speaking driver will meet you by your arrival and through the countryside will take you to visit two very unique medieval towns.
Civita Bagnoregio is your first stop, only recently discover by travellers, this town is noted for its striking position on top of a mountain plateau, overlooking the Tiber river valley, in constant danger of destruction as its edges are falling off, as of 2004, there are plans to reinforce the plateau with steel rods to prevent further geological damage. You can of course only reach the old town by foot crossing a bridge, the scenery is magical and will take your breath-away and as soon as you approach the same entry gates to the old town, you feel like time just stopped here, a wonderful memory to take home.
After your morning visit to Civita, time head of to Orvieto, once the most beautiful towns in Italy and the most beautiful Duomo. The Cathedral is situated in a big square dominating the town It is a classic piece of religious construction, with many elements of design from the 14th until 20th century, with a large and famous rose window, golden mosaics and three huge bronze doors, while inside resides two frescoed chapels decorated by some of the best Italian artist of the period with images of The Judgement Day.
Upon arrival to Orvieto you have also the possibility to visit the Underground it. You can join a guided tour organised by the city hall, which makes it possible to get to know Orvieto’s lost city, originally created by ancient inhabitants, Etruscans for over 2500 years, uninterrupted digging of secret passageways and tunnels, which also was use by the the Popes through centuries to hide once the enemies tried to concur Rome.
You have time to enjoy Orvieto for most part of the afternoon before heading back to the port and head to your next adventure.
